Alexander Technique

This August (2008) the BMJ (British Medical Journal) published the results of a major clinical trial, on the benefits of Alexander Technique lessons. The trial, funded by the Medical research Council and the NHS, has shown that Alexander Technique lessons give long-term benefit to chronic low back pain sufferers.

One-to one lessons teach an individual how to recognise, understand and avoid pain-producing behaviour related to poor postural and movement habits that interfere with the functioning of postural and motor control systems.

Learning and using the Alexander Technique leads to improvements in postural tonus, co-ordination, functioning, mobility and balance - and to significant reduction in non-specific low back pain.

The Alexander Technique is a practical means of achieving poise and freedom of movement through an increased awareness of the way in which we use and misuse our bodies in everyday activities. It can help with conditions such as back pain, neck and shoulder tension, breathing disorders, stress related illnesses and general fatigue.

The technique was developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869 – 1955), an Australian born actor, who experienced voice and breathing difficulties while performing. During long periods of self-observation and experimentation he found that long established habits of undue muscular tension were the cause of his problems, interfering with the best functioning of his whole organism. By consciously changing his habitual pattern of poor use, he considerably improved his performance and general health.

The technique is educational rather then a treatment and is taught on a one-to-one basis. In addition, regular introductory workshops are held at the centre.
